Week 3 of 6 · A New Beginning
Led by Esher · 2026-11-23
Creation’s light becomes personal in Jesus, and darkness is exposed by whether people come to him.
Genesis reading
Genesis 1:3–5; 3:7–8
John reading
John 8:12; 9:1–41
Genesis sets up
On Day One God separates light from darkness and names them. Later, after the fall, eyes open to nakedness and shame, and humanity hides from the Lord among the trees. Genesis already teaches that light is God’s gift — and that sinners flee the presence they were made for.
John accomplishes
Jesus claims Day One for himself: “I am the light of the world.” Then John 9 dramatises the claim. A man born blind receives sight and worship; people who claim to see harden into blindness. Light does not only inform. It divides.
Leader guide — teach aloud or adapt.
1.Begin with Genesis 1:3–5 and refuse to treat light as a mood. God separates, names, and orders. Darkness is real, but it is not sovereign. That is the backdrop for Jesus’ “I am” in John 8:12. He is not offering a flashlight. He is claiming to be the world’s true light and the path out of walking in darkness.
2.Then read Genesis 3:7–8. Sight after the fall is tragic sight — shame, hiding, distance. Hold that beside John 9. Jesus opens eyes so a man can see and then believe. Genesis opened eyes to nakedness; Jesus opens eyes to the Son.
3.Walk the irony of John 9 without rushing. Neighbours argue. Pharisees interrogate. Parents dodge. The healed man grows clearer while the “seeing” grow blinder. Fulfilment here is not only miracle; it is judgment and mercy meeting in one story.
4.Press the pastoral edge: hiding (Gen 3:8) is still our instinct. Jesus finds the outcast (John 9:35) and asks for faith. Coming to the light is costly; staying in claimed sight while refusing Jesus is deadlier.

Key takeaway
Jesus does not only illuminate Genesis’ night. He divides people by whether they come into his light.
Challenge
Each evening, name one place you hid this day (Gen 3:8) and bring it into the light of John 8:12 in prayer.
Light of the world: separate us from darkness we love. Open our eyes, find us in our hiding, and lead us to worship. Amen.
