Week 2 of 6 · A New Beginning
Led by Margreth · 2026-11-16
Genesis gives first life. John gives new life that undoes the fall.
Genesis reading
Genesis 1:2; 2:7; 3:1–7
John reading
John 3:1–21
Genesis sets up
Before dry land appears, the Spirit of God hovers over the waters. Later God breathes into Adam, and dust becomes a living soul. Then Genesis 3 shows how quickly that life is twisted: a lie, a grasp, opened eyes that see shame, and the entrance of death into the human story.
John accomplishes
Nicodemus comes as a teacher of Israel — someone who knows Genesis and still needs to be remade. Jesus will not negotiate for moral upgrades. Birth from above by the Spirit is required. The lifted Son answers the death unleashed in the garden, and eternal life is given to whoever believes.
Leader guide — teach aloud or adapt.
1.Start in Genesis 1:2 and 2:7 before you argue John 3. Life in Scripture is never self-started. The Spirit hovers; God breathes; humanity receives. That frames Jesus’ demand: you must be born again. Nicodemus is not ignorant of religion; he is unfinished without new creation.
2.In John 3:5–8, Jesus uses Spirit language that Genesis-trained ears should recognise. The wind blows where it wishes — sovereign, unseen, effective. Kingdom entry is not managed by pedigree or night-time curiosity. It is Spirit birth.
3.Then face Genesis 3 honestly. The fall is not a cute children’s story about fruit. Eyes open to shame; trust breaks; death enters. John 3:14–16 answers that wound: the Son of Man is lifted up so that believers receive eternal life. The serpent’s damage meets the lifted Son’s gift.
4.Keep a light thread toward Week 6. John will later show the risen Jesus breathing on his disciples (20:22). Week 2 plants the need; Week 6 shows the risen Lord giving the Spirit’s life to a new people.

Key takeaway
You do not improve Adam’s life. You need the Spirit’s new creation life.
Challenge
Pray John 3:3–8 slowly each morning. Ask: “Where am I still trusting old life instead of new birth?”
Holy Spirit, Hoverer and Giver of life: birth us again. Lift our eyes to the Son who was lifted up, and free us from trust in old Adam. Amen.
